Pool project requires $248,000 more for full roof replacement, board told

At the West Islip Union Free School District Board of Education meeting, Buildings and Grounds committee chair Mister Bonnell said demolition at the high-school pool revealed more extensive structural problems than expected and the entire roof for the pool area must be replaced for safety.
Bonnell said the district had a $3,800,000 voted budget for the pool project and that the project included $1,800,000 in the pricing to cover unforeseen problems. Demolition showed cracking and concerns in the metal-beam and concrete-panel roof system installed roughly 70 years ago; replacing the full roof will add about $248,000 to the project cost, he said. Bonnell told the board that the work is expected to remain on schedule and the new roof carries an 18-year-plus warranty.
The chair framed the extra cost as an anticipated type of contractor contingency that the project budget had planned for, and said the district expects insurance recoveries related to earlier solar-panel losses to help offset elevated utility costs elsewhere in the budget. Board members did not object and the committee report concluded that timing and completion remain on track.
What’s next: Buildings and Grounds will continue oversight of the project and present any formal contract amendments to the board if required.
