West Islip board approves personnel appointments, contracts and budget transfers ahead of May 19 budget vote

Board President Mister McCann opened the meeting and reminded the public that the May 19 budget vote is upcoming. The board approved the minutes of its April 21 meeting and then voted to accept a memorandum of agreement with the Teamsters unit representing district employees.
On personnel matters the board approved a probationary appointment for Kate Trezino in special education, effective Sept. 1, 2026, with a probationary period ending Aug. 31, 2029; the appointment places her at Paul J. Blue on BA+15, step 1. The board also approved the recall of three teachers who had been excessed — Bethany Arany (social studies), Jacqueline Jacobs (English) and Kevin Judge (elementary) — and accepted the retirement of Christine Graciola, effective June 30, 2026, after 25 years of service.
The board cleared a consent package of remaining personnel items and approved a series of business motions by voice vote: budget transfers (4603–4611) in the general fund, a list of 2026–27 contracts, a slate of 2026–27 bids (including electrical repairs, tree pruning, maintenance services and other routine contracts), and the surplus of 635 high-school library books.
Finance committee chair Winston Parks reported donor activity and appropriation changes: a $25,000 donation from the Jean Haas Foundation to support scholarships and CNC/engineering programming at West High School, and a $1,000 donation from the district insurance carrier to buy flags and presentation stands; the board approved the related increase in the general fund appropriation.
The president also asked for approval of administrative agreements and routine items, which the board approved: Affordable Care Act administration for 2026–27, a Capital Markets Advisories financial advisory services agreement for 2026–27, a lease with the West High School Teachers Association for 2026–27, consultant services agreements for Linda Bowman, and the special education committee recommendations for students.
The board adjourned into executive session to discuss personnel and legal negotiation matters.
What’s next: the district’s budget vote is scheduled for May 19; the board did not take further public action after adjourning to executive session.
