Students pitch eighth‑grade Washington, D.C., trip; board endorses plan; candidates make brief remarks

A group of middle‑school students accompanied by staff presented a proposed three‑day Washington, D.C., trip for eighth graders, describing an itinerary of museum visits, monuments, a Pentagon tour, Arlington National Cemetery and library/museum visits. Student presenters described transportation (bus departure at 7:30 a.m.), on‑bus amenities and security arrangements at hotels.

Board members and staff praised the detailed itinerary and raised logistical questions. Board member Travis noted the late‑night security and pre‑trip bus inspections as positives; another board member asked whether the whole eighth‑grade class could participate if fundraising met the need, to which students and staff indicated the trip could possibly include the full class (approximately 75 students) depending on fundraising and eligibility requirements. Board members emphasized a desire to avoid excluding students who cannot pay and discussed fundraising ideas to support equitable participation.

In the 'meet the candidates' portion of the agenda, the board presented a written statement from candidate Nicole Smith (read into the record) in which she apologized for her absence, described volunteer and nursing experience, and expressed a desire to be a community‑focused board member. Incumbent Linda Egnor briefly summarized her eleven years of board service and asked for votes. Candidate Wade Niffen introduced himself, described his work on the town zoning board, and said he hopes to be accessible to the community.
