Dade City commission directs staff to pursue reestablishing Main Street program; community meeting set for May

The Dade City Commission voted unanimously to direct staff to proceed with steps to reestablish the city’s Main Street program, a downtown revitalization effort that was active from 1987 until 2013.
Staff member Van Ervin said she had been working with representatives from the Florida Main Street program and described the four-point Main Street approach — jobs, tax savings, historic preservation and community pride — used by Main Street America. Van Ervin said staff would host a community meeting proposed for May 21, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the commission chambers, form a new nonprofit for the Dade City program, identify board members and seek startup funding.
"Authorized to proceed, staff will continue to work with the Florida Main Street program in Tallahassee to reestablish the Main Street program in Dade City," Van Ervin said.
Commissioners recalled the program’s past local successes and several commissioners urged a dedicated Main Street director to reduce staff workload and accelerate activities. The board moved to provide direction to staff to continue the reestablishment process; the roll-call vote carried 5–0.
Staff said a later separate agenda item will come forward if and when the Main Street program is formally activated and any funding requests are identified.
