Culver County Highway Commission hears paving, chip-seal and mowing plans; paver repairs delay work

The Culver County Highway Commission met in May and heard a detailed staff report on mowing, paving and other maintenance priorities, including a delayed paver repair and an impending rebid of the county paving contract.
The Chair opened the meeting and led the group through routine approvals before turning to staff updates. A staff member reported, “We got the mowing underway. It's the sixth,” and said routes were settling after recent staffing changes. The staff member also told commissioners that two wheels for the county paver had been ordered but were delayed, so crews installed a tube and liner to keep the paver running and hoped to begin paving next week.
Why it matters: the county’s paving schedule affects multiple small communities and depends on contractor bids, material costs and equipment readiness. Staff said oil inputs for asphalt have increased and that most supply bids were extended, but paving contracts were not; the county’s paving contract is expected to be rebid around June 30.
Staff outlined the county’s planned paving sequence: beginning in Beech Grove, moving toward Hillsborough, and finishing the season there. Hodge Road (off Goose Pond) will retain its cul-de-sac and is targeted for chip-seal when funds permit. Short Springs and Tallahoma were discussed as candidates for hot-mix paving where the route intersects city limits.
Commissioners and staff reviewed problem spots requiring immediate attention: Thacker Road and sections of Coppers Creek where subdivision growth and tree roots have damaged surface; a washed-under creek near Possum Paul that required more than 20 loads of shot rock; and a slick curve on Nashall caused by shade and moss. A commissioner asked staff to inspect the Nashall curve and consider shoulder work and patching; staff agreed.
On interjurisdictional coordination, staff said Grundy County will pave its portion of a shared road segment and the commission hopes to align schedules so both counties can work simultaneously. A discussion also raised Miller's Crossroads — which lies at a military base entrance — where residents requested a short turn lane to reduce backups; staff emphasized the parcel is on base property and said any change would require coordination with base officials.
Votes at a glance: The commission approved the meeting agenda and last month's minutes by voice vote, and adjourned the meeting after setting the next meeting for June 3 at 03:00.
The meeting closed with staff asking members to notify them of any needed changes to the paving list; no formal new programs or funding decisions were adopted at this session.
