Souderton council authorizes PennDOT to seek federal funds for Central Avenue crossing upgrade

Souderton Borough Council voted May 4 to adopt Resolution 2026-12, authorizing the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to apply on the borough’s behalf for federal funds to upgrade the railroad crossing at Central Avenue.
Staff told the council the project would be funded entirely with federal dollars and would not require local matching funds. Speaker S3 moved the resolution; Council President (speaker S1) seconded. After brief discussion about related crossings, the council called the question and the resolution was adopted.
During the roll call the meeting recorded at least one dissenting vote; two councilors responded “no” when asked, though full member-by-member tallies were not provided in the public remarks. Councilor discussion briefly raised the possibility of using the momentum to address other nearby crossings.
The resolution gives PennDOT permission to prepare and submit a PUC application and to accept federal funds for design and installation. Staff and PennDOT will proceed with the application process; no local appropriation is required according to the materials discussed at the meeting.
Next steps noted by staff include final review of submitted materials and coordination between PennDOT and borough staff on timing of the installation and any temporary traffic impacts.
