Board hears of canine brucellosis cases tied to rescue dogs; officials urge testing and caution

Brian Deese, the state veterinarian and executive director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, told the board the investigation began with a rescue dog that tested positive for Brucella canis after its adopter sought veterinary care. Deese said the dog came from a reservation in South Dakota and that testing of the mother and litter found multiple positives.
“If this is a positive, you have two options,” Deese said. “It’s lifetime quarantine of the dog or euthanasia because there’s no treatment for brucellosis.”
