Superintendent Dr. Valerie Bruneau told the Scotland Board of Education on May 5 that the district received a $10,000 Local Prevention Council grant for nicotine awareness and that it will receive $50,986 in Supplemental Educational Aid K–12 and $19,307 in Pequot Town Aid for educational purposes.
Bruneau said the district is working with EASTCONN and a seven-town Local Governance Partnership on a PreK needs assessment; Scotland returned 11 responses out of 22 families surveyed and touring for PreK enrollment is ongoing. She said Dawn Davis is planning Extended School Year (ESY) programming with interest from 10 towns but that funding to cover BCBA services and busing from other towns is not expected this year; the district will try for funding next year.
Principal Ann Knowles reported enrollment had risen to 92 students for next year, including 22 expected PreK students and one student returning from a STEM program. Knowles said SBAC testing began this week with math scheduled for next week, afterschool programs averaged about 23 students a day, and seven grant-supported field trips are planned for grades 1–6, including a visit to the Meg Nature Center with Ranger Rick. Family Arts Night and the spring concert are scheduled for May 28, with sandwiches to be served.
Why it matters: Grant awards and PreK planning affect program offerings and services available to families; ESY planning raises concerns about unmet funding for behavioral and transportation needs. The board did not take formal action on these items but recorded the updates as part of the superintendent’s and principal’s reports.
Next steps: Continue PreK outreach and pursue funding for ESY supports; administrators will monitor grant drawdown opportunities and facility needs (roof work this summer using Drip funds and attention to the heating system).
