Prince George's County Board of Education votes to close May 7 meeting for executive session

The Prince George's County Board of Education voted 7-0 on May 7, 2026 to close its public meeting and convene an executive session, Chair Brandon Jackson said.

Jackson told the board the meeting would be closed under the Maryland Open Meetings Act, citing the statute and listing specific subsections as authority for discussing sensitive items behind closed doors. He said the board would discuss the Board of Education internal audit, BOE administrative matters including parliamentarian procedure training and the board's annual off-site selection, the PGCPS superintendent's report and budget update, personnel appointments and separations, legal matters involving public charter schools, and plans for a central office move.

The chair said publicly disclosing details of the internal audit or ongoing legal matters could compromise investigations or expose the district to legal or security risks. He also said releasing administrative or budget information before it is finalized could compromise district operations or the district's negotiating position. On personnel matters he noted that sharing applicants' or employees' personal information would violate privacy and human-resources rules.

After the reading of the notice and reasons for closing the session, the board took a roll-call vote. The chair announced there were seven affirmative votes and that the motion to close the meeting was adopted. The board then recessed and proceeded to the executive room; recording was paused at the chair's direction.

The board did not take public action on the matters listed; the transcript records only the motion to close and the move into executive session. Any formal decisions, votes or outcomes from the closed session were not recorded in the public transcript.
