Oak Harbor council considers incentives to encourage use of local vendors at events

Oak Harbor council members on May 5 discussed ways to encourage event organizers to use local vendors after public comment urged more local sourcing.
Mayor Pro Tem said the city has limited authority to mandate vendors for events hosted by external organizers and suggested nonregulatory approaches: offering a list of local vendors with permitting materials or exploring incentives through the special-event permitting process, such as reduced permit fees. “We can't tell, the host of a special event that they have to use local vendors,” the Mayor Pro Tem said, noting that organizers often control vendor selection.
Council Member Peterson pushed back on the idea of mandating or strongly steering vendor selection, saying event hosts seek competitive pricing and that vendors must also make themselves known. The council agreed the suggestion was worth discussing further but made no commitments or ordinance changes at the May 5 meeting.
