Elk County election office to pilot electronic poll books in five precincts ahead of May and November elections

Willie Fry, Elk County Election Director, said the county will pilot electronic poll books in five precincts — Fox 1, South Wharton, Jonesburg 4, Ridgeway 1st and Saint Mary’s 5th — ahead of broader implementation expected for the November election.
“This is the wave of the future,” Fry said, reporting that poll workers have been trained and the county’s vendor is ES&S. Fry said the pilot will run in the upcoming spring election cycle and, if successful, the county aims for full implementation in November.
Fry also announced that the county’s sample ballots are now posted on the elections website and provided absentee-ballot reminders: May 12 is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot; ballots must be returned by May 19 at 8:00 a.m. The polls on May 19 are expected to be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The election director said the pilot will retain the paper poll book alongside the electronic system; voters will still sign the paper roll and also sign electronically. Fry described the electronic signature process: poll workers will look up voters and the voters will sign with a finger or stylus on the electronic device.
The commission did not take action on the presentation; it was delivered for information and to encourage public awareness of the pilot and sample-bulletin availability.
