City and county library officials outline library remodel, programs and upcoming events

Andrew Cara, assistant city manager for the City of Los Altos, told the NCLA board that phase two of the library management remodel has begun, the technical advisory committee has met twice, and the construction contract was fully executed in early December. Cara said the project team expects a substantial milestone around the summer months.

Jennifer Weekes, representing the Santa Clara County Library District, described a statewide survey called "Every Story Counts" and asked board members and residents to participate and share the survey widely. Weekes said the countywide Dolly Parton Imagination Library initiative has already enrolled thousands of children and that the library district is partnering with local Rotary clubs, school districts and nonprofits to boost outreach.

Weekes also noted appointments to the library JPA and an upcoming commissioners' forum on Feb. 7 that will feature the state director of the Imagination Library program. She said the district is not planning a new county funding request under its current formula for the immediate budget period.

Library staff reported that the children's room is open, a new exhibit titled "Bombas: the natural history of bees" premiered recently, and Lunar New Year activities including lion dancing will be presented (lion dance scheduled for 11 a.m.). The play-structure installation date remains pending and staff said they will notify the board when a date is set.
