McDowell County Schools board approves calendars, AIG revision and summer programs in unanimous votes

The McDowell County Board of Education on March 9 voted unanimously to approve a slate of administrative items, including the district’s 2026–27 school calendars, an AIG (Academically or Intellectually Gifted) plan amendment requested by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), and a high-school summer learning program aimed at credit recovery.
The board accepted the proposed calendars after a short presentation from the district calendar lead explaining statutory constraints — including the 215-day requirement and allowable start/close windows for traditional and year-round calendars. Mr. Hughes reviewed the three recommended calendars and the board moved to approve them. The motion to adopt the 2026–27 McDowell County Schools calendars was made by Mr. Allison, seconded by Mr. Suttles, and carried unanimously.
Administrators also presented an update to Standard 1B of the district’s AIG plan that clarified identification and labeling pathways; Jennifer Young, an AIG specialist, told the board the state asked the district to clarify how it places students into service labels and to add a formal pathway for students who show high processing speeds (an “IG” pathway). The board voted to resubmit the revised plan to NCDPI after a motion by Mr. Settle and a second by Mr. Allison; the motion passed unanimously.
Crystal Hamby, assistant superintendent for learning and federal programs, requested board approval for McDow High School’s summer program focused on targeted instruction and credit recovery. The board approved the summer program (motion by Mr. Suttles; second by Mr. Schuford) and noted the district’s Read to Achieve dates for earlier grades for planning purposes.
The meeting also included routine business: the consent agenda (moved by Mr. Baker and seconded by Mr. Schuford) passed unanimously, and personnel actions discussed in closed session (motion by Mr. Schuford; second by Mr. Allison) were approved.
