Seaside Homeless Commission honors local partners and posthumously recognizes CSUMB professor

The Seaside Homeless Commission presented challenge coins to local partners and recognized the family of a late CSUMB professor at its Jan. 7, 2026 meeting.
Chair Benjamin Strickland said the commission created the coins to affirm partners’ efforts addressing homelessness and noted the city highlighted the awards in its newsletter. “He had done a lot of work, to help with the homeless and bring awareness also with his students,” Strickland said of CSUMB professor Seth Pollock, who was unable to attend and died two days later in a bicycle accident; the commission said it will award a coin to Pollock’s family.
Staff and commissioners presented coins to organizations and individuals who work on homelessness issues in Seaside. Stefano Belante of All In Monterey accepted a commission coin on behalf of his organization and said, “Thank you very much.” Commissioners suggested the city’s newsletter and social media would be used to publicize the recognitions.
The commission emphasized the awards are for partners and staff, not people experiencing homelessness, and discussed next steps for presenting coins to recipients who could not attend. The commission also took photos of the presentations to include in city communications.
The commission did not take formal policy action tied to the awards; the item was recognition and appreciation of community partners. The commission moved on to other agenda items after the presentations.
