Commission discusses bike event, youth ambassadors and park safety at San Gabriel City meeting

Commissioners used the work‑plan discussion to surface proposals for neighborhood activation and safety improvements.

Commissioner Kat suggested adding a bike event to the work plan to better connect geographic areas and activate Marshall Park, proposing either a single‑site bike festival or a short route linking two nearby parks. Staff noted a local nonprofit partner, Active SGV, could help; commissioners agreed a modest pilot (one park or a short link between two parks) would reduce staff burden and allow the city to test turnout before expanding.

Members also discussed reviving the youth ambassador program in the fall. Staff said the program was successful previously and that recruitment, interviews and timing would begin ahead of the October meeting so ambassadors could be in place for the school year.

Park safety and amenity issues drew detailed comments. Commissioners raised concerns about several large stone pines at Vincent Lugo Park that have been red‑tagged for removal after limb failures; staff said the parks manager and public works have consulted (and plan to consult outside arborists) and that replacement trees would be considered if removals proceed. Commissioners also asked staff to confirm the status of Wi‑Fi at Vincent Lugo and to follow up on a reported raptor nest in the large tree near the restroom.

Commissioner Owie reported a past collision with a low divider at Smith Park courts and suggested installing soft top‑rail protectors (similar to pool noodles) to reduce head‑injury risk; staff said they would evaluate the retrofit.

No formal votes were taken on the bike event, youth ambassador program or park improvements; staff said they would return to the commission with options, schedules and any resource implications for inclusion in the adopted work plan.
