The Chino City Council approved March 3 a purchase of additional handheld and vehicle radios from Motorola Solutions Inc. to complete the police radio replacement projects.
Senior Management Analyst Musette Ayala said the city operates radios on a county‑overseen system and is responsible for purchasing, programming and maintaining radios connected to that system. Ayala said unit pricing, programming and support costs have risen since the original multi‑year project was approved in 2021 and that delays shifted some replacements into the current fiscal year.
Staff requested appropriation of $199,203.75 from the equipment management fund and increases to projects NC221 ($126,332.95) and NC222 ($72,870.80). The purchase includes radios, software licensing, warranties, chargers and accessories. Ayala described risks of continued use of aging equipment, saying it could impact officer safety, dispatch coordination and emergency response.
Councilmember Flores moved the appropriation and purchase, Councilmember Lucio seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote, 4–0, with the mayor absent. The city manager was authorized to execute all necessary documents for the purchase.
The action completes the five‑year replacement effort that began in 2021; staff said only a small number of handheld and vehicle radios remain to be replaced under the program.
