Senate opens, approves journal and recesses for party caucuses
Summary
The Senate convened, heard an opening prayer offered by Senator Weiner, approved the journal as printed and recessed so Democrats and Republicans could caucus in Rooms 24 and 22, respectively.
The Senate convened and the presiding officer called the chamber to order. The presiding officer announced that Senator Weiner, the senator from Johnson, would offer the opening prayer and asked members to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Senator Weiner offered the Hashkivinu, saying the prayer is normally recited at night and that he offered it “in the context of we should be finishing session soon so that we have a good end session and, and come out the other end in the summer in the interim in good shape.” He recited Hebrew lines followed by an English translation invoking protection and guidance.
The presiding officer then asked whether there were corrections to the journal. “Hearing none, the journal is approved as printed,” the presiding officer said, closing the corrections process for today’s session.
Madam President recognized senators seeking the floor for announcements. Senator Weiner told the chamber, “Democrats will caucus in Room 24.” The presiding officer then recognized the senator from Winneshiek, Senator Klemish, who said, “Madam President, senate Republicans will caucus in Room 22.”
Following those announcements, the presiding officer recessed the Senate, placing the body at ease to allow both parties to caucus.
