City staff and committee members told the finance committee they met with Norfolk Southern and are preparing to manage a large visitor turnout when the historic 'Big Boy' locomotive stops in Struthers on Sunday, July 12.
A committee member said Norfolk Southern told them to expect “anywhere between about 3,000 and 4,000” visitors and stressed that Struthers is the only local stop; the member said staff will meet Monday with department heads and business owners to coordinate parking, viewing zones and shuttles. “The train is going to stop at 11:30,” the committee member said.
Officials discussed potential parking at the Bob Seamway acreage, shuttling using the senior-van and contacting the school about bus support. The committee discussed staging areas along the route so visitors could spread out rather than crowd a single location. Members also said they will coordinate with local law enforcement for traffic control and crowd management and will finalize details with Norfolk Southern.
Committee members discussed event-programming opportunities, including a farmers market, a small stage and music; they cautioned against scheduling other new events on the same day to keep focus on the locomotive visit. One member said the city hopes to fold the visit into the city’s 250th celebration.
Staff will meet with department heads to finalize logistics and will publish guidance for parking, viewing and safety in advance of the visit.
