TAC approves reclassification of Vermont National Guard Road to Major Collector

The Chittenden County Transportation Advisory Committee voted unanimously to reclassify Vermont National Guard Road from a local road to a major collector, making the short segment eligible for federal roadway funding.
Jason Charest of CCRPC presented the request on behalf of the Town of Colchester, which supports the change. Committee members questioned whether the request was tied to the road serving a military facility or intended to qualify the segment for federal dollars.
Chris Jolly of the Federal Highway Administration said the change would make the section eligible for federal funds but that, because the segment is short, it likely would not yield large additional dollars. Members also discussed whether similar roads that serve military facilities should be reclassified.
Bruce Hoar moved to approve the functional classification change; Amy Bell seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
The TAC did not attach extra conditions to the approval. CCRPC staff will reflect the change in the county functional classification records and coordinate with VTrans and the Town of Colchester on next steps.
