Jefferson County Board unanimously approves personnel actions, transportation charter and facility contracts

The Jefferson County Board of Education met April 14, 2026, at the Central Office Building in Birmingham and unanimously approved a slate of routine personnel and operational items, the board president said.
Mr. Ronnie Dixon, president of the Jefferson County Board of Education, presided over the special meeting convened at 10:00 a.m.; Ms. Stephanie Floyd, vice president, Mrs. Carita Venable and Mr. Walter Curry were present. Superintendent Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin, Jr. and board attorney Whit Colvin were also listed as in attendance. The meeting concluded at 10:05 a.m.
The board approved the meeting agenda and the minutes of its March 19, 2026 meeting on unanimous votes. The board then approved Superintendent Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin, Jr.'s recommendation to adopt Personnel Actions, Addendum B, and Salary Supplements for April 14, 2026.
Under Support Services, Dr. Laura Ware presented a revised charter agreement with Gray Express Charters to provide transportation for McAdory High School students to attend Education Day at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell, Georgia, on April 23, 2026. The revision added an extra bus to the contract. The board approved the charter agreement unanimously.
The Teaching and Learning advisory committee's "other matters" were approved as a package. Those items included a Contracted Services Agreement with Nicholas Pappas to serve as musical clinician for McAdory High School's spring musical (April 15–May 3, 2026) and an amended quote (#Q-318522 v4) from Renaissance Learning to extend the SAEBRS screening software subscription through June 30, 2026; Renaissance Learning applied a full discount for the extension, yielding no additional cost to the district.
Under Operations, the board approved a service agreement with Mobile Communications America, Inc. for a smartphone and tablet communications app to allow bus drivers to communicate with each other and the transportation department. The board also approved Change Order No. 1 for the Shades Valley High School baseball field renovation, increasing the original contract sum from $463,000.00 to a revised contract sum of $478,769.95 — an increase of $15,769.95 — to cover drainage re-work and rock excavation, with supporting documentation attached to the agenda.
The board approved Use of Facility agreements allowing Tournament Truck to use Mortimer Jordan High School's gymnasium and cafeteria for a two-day wrestling tournament on April 18–19, 2026, and allowing USSSA to use the Mortimer Jordan athletic field for a two-day baseball tournament on April 18, 2026 and May 16, 2026.
All motions recorded in the minutes were made and seconded (where indicated) and passed unanimously: the record lists Yes votes from Mr. Ronnie Dixon, Ms. Stephanie Floyd, Mrs. Carita Venable and Mr. Walter Curry for each action taken.
With no further business, President Ronnie Dixon adjourned the meeting at 10:05 a.m.
