City council voted to accept a federal planning grant to fund a Safe Streets for All program aimed at improving walkability, bikeability and pedestrian safety across Muskogee.
Public works staff explained the program is a planning grant administered through the Federal Highway Administration. The total award is $486,875, with a federal share of $389,500 and a required city match of $97,375; staff said the match is already budgeted in the current year. The grant will pay for engineering, community engagement, accident-data analysis and a non‑motorized safety plan that can be used to pursue future capital grants and Safe Routes to School projects.
"This grant will help us identify projects such as sidewalks near schools and other improvements that increase walkability and safety," staff said. Council approved acceptance by roll call.
Next steps include issuing a request for proposals to procure an engineering firm to carry out the planning work and conducting community engagement to develop proposed capital improvements for future grant funding.
