Henderson County board honors students, coaches and maintenance staff

The Henderson County Board of Education on March 16 recognized student ambassadors and several school teams and staff for recent achievements, and posed for group photographs to mark the honors.

Student ambassador Jack Ryan Rush told the board he plans to play football at Georgetown College and major in exercise science. "My name is Jack Ryan Rush... I plan on playing football at Georgetown College and majoring in exercise science," he said. Fellow ambassadors named plans to attend the University of Kentucky and other colleges.

Sarah Fleming, principal of Spotsville Elementary, introduced Fergus McKeler as the school’s judges scholar and said he “truly represents everything you'd want in a Spotsville Panther,” citing his academic awards, leadership and extracurricular participation. The board also recognized Amari Blight as South Heights Elementary’s judges scholar for classroom achievement and leadership.

Athletics drew substantial recognition. Board members congratulated the Henderson County High School boys swim team for winning a region championship and reaching the state finals and noted the girls were region runner‑up. The board named Melanie Mays Region 1 boys coach of the year. Coach Thompson said the swim team “works hard. They practice five days a week” and noted optional summer conditioning for some athletes.

The HCHS dance team was honored after finishing third in its NDA division and qualifying for nationals; the cheer squads — JV and varsity — were also recognized for high placements at regional competitions. "It takes a lot of heart, a lot of dedication," Coach Boston said of the cheer program.

Board members also recognized the maintenance department for daily facility work across the district’s 13 schools. Maintenance staff members described the group as a collaborative team that responds to weather and building needs year‑round.

The recognitions section concluded before the board moved to routine business and votes.
