Westlake previews hands‑on science and social‑studies adoptions; parent review set for March 19

Westlake City Schools staff told the board they will ask for approval at the next board meeting to adopt new science and social‑studies instructional materials after teacher pilots, vendor demonstrations and parent review.
Amanda Musman, associate superintendent, said the district selected Experience Science (science) and a new social‑studies vendor for grades 5–6 that emphasizes hands‑on kits and manipulatives. "It is very hands‑on. It comes with kits and manipulatives, things you don't typically see in a social studies class," she said.
Musman described a deliberate adoption process: staff solicited samples from Ohio‑approved publishers over the summer, held vendor demonstration days in November for staff review, ran pilots and site visits for science resources in multiple grade bands, and convened department chairs and teacher groups in January–February to form recommendations.
A parent review committee will convene on Thursday, March 19, with PTA representatives and parent volunteers recommended by principals. Administrators said they will provide overview pages for parents that list grade-level choices and the reasons the district selected each resource, and teacher representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
Final selections and budget information will be provided to the board before the formal adoption vote.
