Moffat County backs regional submission to DOE request for information on nuclear life cycle

Moffat County commissioners voted March 24 to join a regional Western and Southern Colorado submission in response to a U.S. Department of Energy request for information (RFI) on nuclear life‑cycle topics.
Jeff Comstock, Natural Resources, told the board the regional submission differs from the governor’s expected RFI response by addressing the full life cycle and enabling local communities to participate in a broader discussion about manufacturing, supply chains and other potential regional opportunities. Comstock said the county’s endorsement does not commit to reactor siting, nuclear storage or other specific outcomes: “it does not in any way commit to a decision. It does not commit to any reactor sites or site selection. It does not commit to nuclear storage.”
Melody, a board member, said counties on the Western Slope and nearby states had raised similar interest at a recent conference and that a regional approach would strengthen the area’s ability to participate rather than be overlooked. A motion to approve Resolution 2026-42 passed by voice vote.
County officials said the endorsement is intended to keep regional options open and ensure Moffat County and neighboring jurisdictions are invited into DOE discussions; it is not a policy decision on siting, storage or any specific project.
