County approves transfer process to move Browns Park School from BLM to alumni association

Moffat County commissioners on March 24 approved Resolution 2026-39 authorizing county staff to accept a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land transfer and to convey the Browns Park School building to the Browns Park Alumni Association.
Jeff Comstock of the Natural Resources Department told the board the Alumni Association has maintained the building as a community center for about 25 years and that the structure sits on BLM land due to a survey error. Comstock said the county would pay the appraised value of $17,000 for the land and immediately permit a transfer to the Alumni Association, explaining the county’s role is to “facilitate” the conveyance rather than acquire new property.
Comstock described the paperwork the county attorney prepared and said the action authorizes Donald Broom to sign the required instruments — including a special warranty deed, bill of sale and sale contract — once the BLM transfers the land to the county. A commissioner moved to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Board members noted public comments had raised concerns that the county would be acquiring property, and Comstock and other officials emphasized the county is acting as a conduit so the local alumni group can receive the land and preserve the historic community building. The next step is completion of the BLM transfer, after which county staff will process the conveyance to the Browns Park Alumni Association.
