Wickliffe wins $7,500 playground grant; golf-course opening may be delayed

Recreation Director Tim told council the department will attend a job fair and is recruiting summer seasonal staff for pool, camps and the golf course. He said the department secured a $7,500 community development grant through local realtor networks and plans to put that money toward playground perimeter improvements.
Tim also reported ongoing turf damage on the greens at Great Ridge Golf Course and said consultants advised aggressive recovery steps—seed, fertilize and top-dress—and to keep people off the greens while they recover. “We’re probably going to delay the start of the opening of the season till mid to late April just to keep people off of the greens,” he said, adding that leagues typically start in May and temporary greens would allow play if recovery takes longer.
Council members asked how many leagues use the course and expressed concern that delaying play could cause leagues to move elsewhere. Tim said most league play begins in May and the late-April delay is intended to preserve the greens; the city will monitor growth and choose temporary measures if necessary.
The grant is described as a community improvement award routed through local realtor associations; Tim said staff will use it for playground perimeter repairs. No vote was taken; the matter will proceed through routine department implementation and future committee oversight if budget or contract changes are needed.
