"After reviewing different options, the board voted to place a proposal on the ballot that would adjust that structure going forward," said Cory Swint, school board president. Swint said the change would generally result in two or three seats being up for election in a given year.
The board’s move comes after the district was created in 2021 from a merger of Districts 1 and 8. "When that happened, board terms were staggered, and now that schedule results in three positions being up for election one cycle, and four positions the next," Swint said, adding that the current pattern can allow a majority of the board to turn over at once and make it harder to maintain continuity and institutional knowledge.
Swint also told residents that the district must hold a public question this year about publishing board meeting minutes in the district’s official newspaper. "We also need to hold an election this year for the required public question about whether board meeting minutes should be published in the official newspaper," he said. The district said there are no school board seats otherwise scheduled for election this year, which is one reason it chose to present these measures to voters now.
Dr. Germundson opened the announcement to District #7 families and turned the update over to Swint. The district said it will share more information about the measures as the election approaches and directed residents to its election webpage at Williston schools.org for details.
