Ceres council ratifies Vanessa Portillo as finance director, with one abstention

The Ceres City Council on Dec. 8 ratified an employment agreement appointing Vanessa Portillo as finance director.
City staff told the council the finance director position had been vacant since Nov. 7 (date as stated in the staff report), that Portillo was selected from a pool of applicants after interviews and reference checks, and that she currently serves as chief of financial operations for BSR HR in Stlos County (as stated in the staff report). Staff said Portillo currently oversees roughly 11 employees and a $253 million budget in her prior role.
Council members welcomed Portillo and said they looked forward to working with her. Council Member Casey abstained from the roll-call vote; the motion carried with four votes in favor and one abstention. Portillo was present at the meeting and councilmembers gave a brief welcome.
The council did not receive public opposition during the meeting; the appointment was handled in the council's new business section and the item was brought forward for ratification by council motion.
