Library commission approves 2026 work plan, will present it to city council

The Los Altos Library Commission voted to approve its 2026 work plan as amended and will present the plan at a joint meeting with the City Council in February. Commissioners signaled broad support for the document after staff reviewed priorities including main‑library improvements, targeted outreach and plans for maintaining services during any closure.

Staff said the plan closely follows the commission’s 2025 priorities and centers on finishing design phases for the main‑library remodel, expanding programs and identifying how services would be maintained if the main building closes for construction. The commission was told staff is coordinating with accounting, consultants and community partners and will return updates as design work advances.

Commissioners pressed staff for clearer timing on construction and public‑education work tied to the remodel. Staff described provisional time frames for outreach and education work and said some programmatic efforts could begin before construction starts to prepare the public. The commission asked staff to refine dates and return with any edits before the joint council meeting.

The motion to accept the work plan as amended carried; commissioners present recorded affirmative votes. The commission will present the document to the City Council at a scheduled joint meeting in February for additional feedback and any council direction.
