Staff reports removal and redesign of several speed cushions on Carmelita bicycle boulevard

Staff updated the commission on recent work along the Carmelita bicycle boulevard: four of the original two‑piece speed cushions have been removed and the remaining cushions will be retrofitted into three‑piece speed‑table sections to reduce their abruptness for motorists and cyclists. The retrofit replaces a single bump with a table‑style profile so riders and drivers experience a gentler traverse.

Mr. Wong said the first two cushions recommended for removal are just west of Cortez, and that cushions at signalized intersections (for example Baloa) will remain. Part deliveries delayed work; staff expects to complete the remaining modifications in the coming week and will monitor community feedback after installation. Commissioners asked staff to check manufacturer guidance on comfortable approach speeds and to consider pavement marking or additional arrows on both approaches where tree cover reduces visibility. Staff also said emergency vehicles retain a route through the area and the three‑piece tables will maintain appropriate gaps to allow larger vehicles to pass.

There was one brief public comment (student Lucas Re) who asked about the original purpose of the cushions; staff confirmed the cushions were installed as part of the bicycle boulevard project to slow traffic where a dedicated bike lane was not feasible.
