At a special meeting, the Lawndale City Council opened a time capsule placed in December 2000 and displayed its contents, including a 2000–2001 city budget, promotional materials, planning reports and commemorative coins and pins.
The event began with a short video from 2000 and a flag salute. Mayor Pro Tem Kernney thanked public works, cable staff and the city-hall renovation contractor for locating and removing the capsule and invited a volunteer identified in the transcript as Jack to open it. Council members and the city clerk then took turns presenting items from the capsule to the audience.
Council members highlighted documents that reflected local projects and civic life at the turn of the century: an album from a 1997 sheriff station dedication (the album was identified as bearing the signature of 'Supervisor Ivon Brady Burke'), marketing brochures for the city, a Hawthorne Boulevard revitalization design report credited to Parsons Transportation Group, newsletters and newspaper clippings including a December 1999 Tribune item marking the city’s 40th anniversary, and an LA Times real-estate item that listed Lawndale’s median price in June 2000 at about $170,000. The group also displayed commemorative pins, bronze and gold coins distributed at earlier dedications, business cards from past officials and a joint-use gymnasium agreement dated July 10, 2000.
Officials said some items will be placed in a new 2025 time capsule. Meeting leaders removed plaques that marked the 2000 capsule location in the foyer and said a new dedication plaque will be installed showing the 2025 capsule’s location; the 2025 capsule is scheduled in the meeting remarks to be opened in 2050.
The session included a public photo opportunity with council members and the city clerk beside the displayed artifacts and ended with recorded music. The transcript does not specify the meeting date; the materials shown were identified in the meeting as originating in 1997–2000.
