Alameda parks director outlines construction timeline, spring programs and summer hiring

The department opened registration for aquatics programs and swim lessons for all ages and confirmed spring break camps will run Monday–Friday, April 13–17; homeschool PE and other youth offerings will run at the district’s gyms. Director Long listed upcoming teen events, including a career prep and job‑fair activity on March 26 and intergenerational technology lessons at Alameda Point and the Mastick Senior Center on March dates provided in the activity guide.

The department is recruiting part‑time seasonal employees and volunteers for summer activities; volunteers can earn community service hours and help staff events such as the spring shindig, movie nights, the sand‑castle contest and the Fourth of July parade. Director Long also announced a junior leader summer program for July 6–31 (8 a.m.–5:30 p.m.) to help teens build leadership skills and work experience with ARPD.
On maintenance and infrastructure, staff described recent work to adapt Little John Park for Little League with safety and ADA upgrades, an emergency tree removal at Lincoln Park on Feb. 9 to protect a playground, and an irrigation upgrade at Gene Sweeney Open Space Park that includes a new smart clock to reduce water use. Staff also participated in chainsaw safety and electric mower demonstrations as part of a gradual move toward electrifying equipment.
Director Long closed by reminding the public that the department is recruiting for a full‑time gardener (application deadline Sunday, March 29) and directing residents to the city website for more program and job listings. The commission accepted the report and proceeded to the next agenda items.
