"When parents drop off their kids to school every day, they expect them to be safe until the end of the day," Joseph Rivera said. He said parents were told students would not be permitted to leave campus, that disruptions would be minimized, and that parents could excuse children if they planned to participate — but the next day many students left and were seen downtown. "We got lucky that no student was hurt," he said, arguing that policy should be consistently enforced.
Rivera cited District Policy 442, which he said states disruptive demonstrations and walkouts during the school day are not permitted and noted that compulsory-attendance laws apply. Board members noted they could not take up a formal policy discussion that evening because the item was not posted on the agenda.
The board did not take action at the meeting but acknowledged the parent's concerns and thanked local law enforcement for being present downtown during the event.
