Residents oppose Orchard Shores rezoning that could allow storage units; project proponents say access will be off Jensen Road

Residents attending the East Region Town Hall urged the council to oppose proposed rezoning near Orchard Shores that could allow commercial (C3) uses and storage-unit development.
Multiple community members — named at the meeting as Yolanda Chavez, Darlene Dillon, Robert Eldredge, John and David Cashwell — spoke against rezoning parcels by Orchard Shores, saying they did not want storage units in the area. Steve Robins also opposed C3 designation on the Kuehn properties accessible from Highway 20.
Richard Kuehn, identified in public comment, said the storage-unit project would not use Orchard Shores facilities and that access would be via Jensen Road. “Storage units are less invasive than residential use,” he said, and invited other thoughts on zoning for the Highway 20/Sulphur Bank Road parcel.
Linda Cunha asked that a Low Income Housing proposal by Orchard Shores be placed on a future agenda. Susan Gilbert objected to storage units on the grounds they provide no employment and are unnecessary in the area.
ERTH did not take a formal vote on rezoning at the April 1 meeting. The board encouraged public comment and noted land-use matters were being tracked by the Land Use Committee and County planning staff.
