County planner previews Lake County 2050 draft and East Lake area plan as EIR enters public comment

Lake County’s Community Development Department presented the draft Lake County 2050 General Plan and the East Lake Area Plan at the East Region Town Hall meeting, noting the environmental-impact report is available for public comment through April 24.
Community Development Director Mireya Turner reviewed outreach efforts and said documents and the EIR can be viewed at LakeCounty2050.org. Turner said the planning team will review public input in May and June, with planned Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors hearings in the fall of 2026.
Residents pressed staff on specific concerns. Sterling Wellman raised fire-safety and evacuation-route issues for Spring Valley and the Indian Valley Reservoir dam; Angela Amaral asked whether the plan might replace a geothermal element with a broader energy element. Margaux Kambara urged reviewers to compare the current EIR with earlier analyses and to consider stormwater and wetland preservation.
Turner acknowledged that roughly 1,000 paper subdivision lots in the East Lake Area Plan are flagged for potential rezoning and that property owners had not yet been contacted. Board members and residents asked how rezoning would affect the tax base and whether parcels containing existing homes would be removed from proposed rezones.
ERTH approved, 5-0, preparing a comment letter on the General Plan and East Lake Area Plan. The comment period and the EIR deadline were emphasized repeatedly by speakers as the immediate next steps for residents who want to influence the proposed policies and goals.
