ERTH urges county to extend Big Oak Peer Center operations as closure looms

The East Region Town Hall (ERTH) voted unanimously to ask Lake County Behavioral Health for an extension to keep the Big Oak Peer Center open after staff reported the center will close June 2, 2026, due to budget changes.

David Ables, the peer support lead, told the council the center is scheduled to close on June 2 and described initial plans for a proposed nonprofit, Kindred Spirits Lake County, which is exploring purchasing and moving services to church buildings on the Plaza. He said the center’s monthly food giveaway—serving about 900 people—will disappear unless an interim solution is found.

ERTH members framed the vote as an effort to maintain services while the nascent nonprofit explores grants and relocation. Donna Mackiewicz presented the motion; the council approved a letter to Behavioral Health asking for an extension of the current site through Dec. 31, 2026 on a 5-0 vote.

Lisa Benavides suggested the site could also serve as a heating/cooling and resiliency center while organizers secure funding. Board members said restoring the food program is a priority and noted it may take roughly six months to establish a permanent alternative.

The council’s letter asks Behavioral Health to delay closure at the current location to avoid an immediate loss of services for clients and the broader community. ERTH did not commit funding to the center at the meeting and said further actions will depend on the county’s response and the nonprofit’s progress.

ERTH plans follow-up at its next regular meeting May 6 and will monitor any county response to the extension request.
