Council approved Ordinance 2026-19E on March 31, ratifying three-year labor agreements with the Fraternal Order of Police (patrol officers and sergeants) covering Jan. 1, 2026' Dec. 31, 2028.
Chief Nesbbit told council the agreements refine prior contract language, set pay adjustments to remain competitive in the regional market and include an agreed implementation of 12-hour shifts. The chief said the department's previous schedule (four on/two off, ~8.5-hour shifts) yielded a true weekend off only about every six weeks; under a 12-hour schedule officers will typically get a weekend off every other week, which the chief said improves work–life balance.
Administration described the changes as steps toward more consistent staffing and a competitive hiring posture. Council approved the ordinance by roll-call vote; members present registered affirmative votes.
Next steps described in the meeting note that the police department will implement scheduling adjustments and document how staffing patterns align with the new contract terms. The council did not debate specific pay figures in detail during the public meeting; the chief described the outcomes as negotiated improvements to market competitiveness.
