CCAC resource fair draws dozens of vendors; committee plans May recognition event

Frederick County’s Special Education Advisory Committee opened its meeting with widespread praise for the weekend resource fair and used the gathering as a springboard to plan additional community outreach.
Chair Jamie Shofflin thanked volunteers and subcommittees for a “tremendous amount of energy and publicity” that she said helped make the resource fair the committee’s signature event. Subcommittee reports said roughly 64 vendors registered and about 70 attended on the day, leading organizers to add extra tables to accommodate demand.
Parents at the meeting urged better language support and clearer event signage after some families reported confusion about parking and access; committee members and directors committed to improving RSVP accommodation options, coordinating Spanish outreach through FCPS communications, and ensuring ASL access when needed.
The events subcommittee announced a new Champions of Special Education recognition program scheduled for May 12 at TJ High School and said nominations will be accepted via a Google Form; nominations may come from parents, guardians, students and community members and a nomination FAQ will be circulated. The committee also described ongoing parent workshops (IEP series, ESY guidance, trauma-informed events), sensory-friendly activities and a transition youth fair planned for the spring.
Committee members praised staff and community partners for the fair’s scale and recommended additional on-site interpretation and clearer vendor parking plans for next year.
