Sto-Rox principals report gains in early grades, PBIS fidelity and new classroom supports

Dr. Lisa Mumau, principal at the Sto-Rox Primary Center, walked the advisory committee through school-level initiatives she said contributed to student growth: PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports), a developing K'3 MTSS model, intervention platforms (Lexia, ALEX), reset spaces and a buddy-teacher model, and restorative-practice training for staff. Mumau cited interim assessment results showing that 64% of K'3 students showed MAPS growth between fall and winter and that 60% showed growth in reading over the same interval.

"Sixty-four percent of all K to 3 students showed growth between fall and winter," Mumau said, adding that the school will report year-end MAPS results in a few weeks.

Heather Johnson, the upper elementary principal, described school culture efforts including a house system, staff professional development (including Ron Clark Academy exposure), and parent-engagement events. Johnson noted community and business support: Citizens Bank donated $10,000 to buy new instruments for the elementary arts program, and volunteers and local donors provided additional event support.

Johnson said the upper elementary sustained PBIS fidelity across tiers 1'3 and set goals for attendance and behavior: a goal to reach roughly 90% attendance and an aim to reduce office referrals by 25% through consistent SEL, PBIS and restorative practices.

Both principals emphasized parent outreach (events such as "data and donuts" and house-block parties) and plans to expand student-led data sharing and student voice in conferences in 2026-27. The principals asked the committee for continued support as they implement MTSS and the makerspace grant deliverables.

Next steps: Principals will continue to monitor MAPS year-end results, advance MTSS implementation, and report progress to the advisory committee during the next cycle.
