Board reviews Young Fives Pathfinder furniture plan; staff to pilot selected pieces before final purchase

District staff presented furniture selections and a phased purchase plan for the Young Fives Pathfinder pilot at North Creek during the May 4 meeting.

Staff described a commons area with mobile shelving, soft seating, sensory corners and project tables; three adjacent learning studios will use modular, movable pieces to support the district’s guiding principles for design and a proving‑ground approach. The recommended package includes reuse of some North Creek furniture and a construction‑integrated tree‑bench element that must be installed as part of the construction scope.

The recommendation (first reading) Staff presented the recommendation as a first reading. A number in the presentation materials was referenced (approximately $116,682) as the recommended furniture total to be funded from the 2019 bond; staff said they plan a limited September pilot of selected pieces before completing the larger purchase to confirm fit and function.

Board members asked about durability, warranty terms, accessibility and how existing furniture will be redistributed across the district. Staff said most vendor pieces carry roughly 10‑year warranties and that existing furniture would be repurposed at Pierce Lake and elsewhere to avoid waste.

Next steps Because this was a first reading, the board did not vote on final purchase authorization at the May 4 meeting. Staff will pilot selected pieces in September, refine the final order based on teacher and student feedback, and return with an action item for board approval.
