Christian Service Mission and city partners describe major repair work on veteran's home

The council heard a presentation on Sept. 20 from Christian Service Mission about a critical-repair project that restored the home of a long-time resident and veteran.
Tracy Hipps (S24) said the mission partnered with the city's Community Development Department to identify Theodore Dodson's house as needing more than a roof repair; the city contributed $7,500 and volunteers and partners multiplied that into roughly $45,000 of work, Hipps said. "We basically gutted 50% of the house and repaired all electrical," one presenter said, adding that the HVAC was redone, new paint and flooring were installed, cabinets were replaced and exterior work and yard cleanup were completed.
Mr. Dodson (speaker S15) addressed the council and thanked the mission, volunteers and city staff. Presenters noted partner funding and support from Wells Fargo, local churches and hundreds of volunteers.
Mayor's-office speakers and council members praised the project as an example of public-private partnership and called it a model for neighborhood revitalization. Council members asked staff to continue coordinating similar efforts and to consider replication in other neighborhoods where residents face housing quality and accessibility issues.
