Select Board approves liquor renewal and outdoor-consumption permits; brewery seeks East Street closure for June event

The Northfield Select Board approved a liquor-license renewal for Good Measure Brewing and granted conceptual outside-consumption permits for Good Measure and The Stick at its March 24 meeting.
Scott Kerner, representing Good Measure Brewing, joined the meeting remotely and said the brewery would like to close East Street for an anniversary party on June 20. "We did it last year and we want to do it again," Kerner said, adding that he had spoken to local first responders and that the interim fire chief was "all in and on board with our plans." Kerner described signage, volunteer blockades at temporary closure points and a plan to clear the street by about 9 p.m.
Board members asked about bands, signage and emergency access. Kerner said there would be a single band that would finish by about 8:30–9 p.m., volunteers at blockades and coordination with the ambulance squad and ladder-truck access if needed. The manager confirmed that under existing practice the manager’s office can authorize such closures and said staff would continue to coordinate with first responders.
Later on the agenda the board moved, seconded and approved Good Measure’s liquor license renewal by voice vote and approved conceptual outside-consumption permits for both Good Measure Brewing and The Stick. During the outside-consumption discussion board members said they want to revisit a more formal permitting process or ordinance to avoid last-minute conflicts with adjacent businesses, particularly citing past sizing issues and proximity to a laundromat.
The board directed staff to add creation of a permanent or formalized outdoor-consumption process to their goals so future parklet or street-use events have clearer rules and permit pathways.
The board did not impose additional conditions on the June 20 closure request at the March 24 meeting; Kerner said he would keep his phone on and work with staff on any follow-up information.
