Akron City Council approved a block of consent items and took separate votes that together advanced administrative appointments, emergency contracting, and several infrastructure and program agreements.
The council voted 11 to 0 to approve the consent agenda, which incorporated several ordinances and resolutions placed there earlier in the meeting. Separately, the council unanimously approved a resolution reappointing Floyd Easley, Renee Mead and Scott Rowland and appointing Theodore Forsberg to the Commercial or Industrial Buildings Appeals Board; the clerk recorded that resolution as passing 11 to 0 after the committee report was found favorable and the rules were suspended. Councilman Kammer explained the appointments were intended to fill vacancies so the appeals board can meet.
The council also approved an ordinance ratifying actions by the director of public service to contract Butcher and Sons Excavating for emergency demolition of nuisance structures without publicly advertising for bids; the committee report was favorable and the ordinance passed by voice vote after suspension of the rules. Several other items were either placed on the consent agenda and approved by the 11-0 consent vote or received committee reports and suspension of rules, including:
- An ordinance amending code language for the Vacant Commercial or Industrial Buildings Appeals Board (placed on the consent agenda). - A resolution expressing council support for the Reconnecting Our Community / Interbelt master plan (committee report favorable; rules suspended; passed). - An ordinance authorizing maintenance operations agreements with the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition for service at Summit Lakeshore Park (placed on the consent agenda; a ribbon-cutting was noted for May 16 at 1 p.m.). - An ordinance to proceed with improvements on Wendling Drive (placed on the consent agenda). - An ordinance authorizing the city to contract with the County of Summit’s legal defender office for indigent defense in 2026 (placed on the consent agenda). - An ordinance authorizing advertised bid contracting for improvements at Hyre Park and for tennis-court work and a separate ordinance to apply for USTA Tennis Venue Services grant funding (placed on the consent agenda). - A resolution approving reappointments and appointments to the Housing Appeals Board (committee report favorable; rules suspended; passed 11 to 0).
One item, a resolution expressing support for House Bill 58 (as passed by the Ohio House on 02/25/2026), was placed on the agenda and council time was granted for further consideration later; the clerk recorded that time would be granted rather than completing final action at this meeting.
The council’s votes were largely procedural and unanimous; council members repeatedly relied on committee reports and moved to suspend rules to expedite passage of personnel and operational measures. The meeting record shows no contested roll-call votes on the listed items.
