The Estill County Board of Education voted unanimously March 19 to approve a memorandum of agreement with the Kentucky Career Center of the Bluegrass (WorkSmart) to place juniors and seniors in paid internships across district functions, and separately approved an updated memorandum with Eastern Kentucky University’s TRIO Educational Talent Search program.
Superintendent Brock described the MOA as a partnership that will allow students to be paid while they train in district positions such as maintenance, custodial, paraeducator support and ATC vocational placements; the partner will handle wages and workers’ compensation for hours worked under the agreement. Board members asked about age and grade eligibility; Brock said the program primarily targets juniors and seniors and he would confirm any specific age requirements.
The board also approved a renewed MOU with EKU TRIO Educational Talent Search, which the district uses to support college-readiness activities. Brock said the original partnership ran five years and the updated MOU ensures continued services for students should the program be refunded.
Board members characterized the MOA and MOU as meaningful opportunities to provide work-based learning and college support. The internships have a funding window through June 30 under current funding; administration said they expect potential refunding but will return to the board with confirmation and implementation details.
