Aberdeen approves remount of damaged ambulance and contingency fund transfer to restore five-unit EMS fleet
Summary
After a Feb. 18 collision damaged a 2013 Horton ambulance and reduced the fleet to four units, the council approved remounting the damaged vehicle using Premier Specialty Vehicles' gas-chassis quote of $212,780 (preferred for fleet consistency) and authorized a contingency transfer; staff said a diesel option was cheaper ($183,968) but lacked required safety equipment.

Fire Chief Joel reported that a Feb. 18 collision seriously damaged a 2013 F550 Horton ambulance, reducing the City of Aberdeen’s advanced-life-ambulance fleet from five to four units and creating a risk to timely 911 response. Chief Joel said the department solicited three quotes to remount the damaged unit and evaluated bids on cost, delivery time, chassis type, operational continuity and crew safety.
Chief Joel said the lowest bid was a diesel-chassis option at $183,968 but that it did not include graphics or the ability to add the department’s preferred safety equipment for the patient compartment. The department recommended remaining with a gas-powered chassis for maintenance consistency and technician familiarity. The recommended gas option from Premier Specialty Vehicles totaled $212,780 with a projected seven-month delivery time and included use of a loaner vehicle while the new ambulance is built.
Chief Joel emphasized a priority to install a Performax 4-point restraint system in the patient compartment to allow EMS providers to remain restrained while delivering patient care. The council moved and seconded approval to proceed with the Premier Specialty Vehicles remount and to surplus the damaged chassis; the motion included authorization to transfer contingency funds to the fire department as part of resolution 260303R. Council approved the motion on roll call.
Ending: Staff will coordinate purchase and remount logistics; delivery is projected at about seven months under the preferred option and staff expect to use a loaner vehicle during construction.
