The City Council voted unanimously to add $455,000 to the Sports Park Building Improvement Project and approved an amendment increasing the contract not‑to‑exceed amount for Laghmani and Associates Design Group Inc.
Public Works Director Juan Larios told the council the renovation of the 1977 building is near substantial completion after work to replace interior finishes, install a wooden gym floor suitable for basketball and pickleball, add HVAC and address structural and ADA upgrades. "Construction is nearly complete. We're looking at a mid‑February substantial completion date," Larios said, adding staff will tent the building for termite fumigation before furnishing and IT setup.
The additional appropriation covers discovered conditions and recommended courtyard and site improvements: building change orders ($160,000), courtyard repairs ($200,000), contingency for IT and termite treatment and other project contingencies, Larios said. He explained the courtyard is 50 years old with cracking concrete and drainage issues and that fencing and exterior lighting are included in the new scope.
Councilmembers praised the improvement and stressed the project’s community benefit; Mayor Pro Tem Fisher said the upgrades will provide long‑needed safe indoor recreation space. The council approved the appropriation and the contract amendment by unanimous oral vote.
