Board approves practice-field documents and schematic design for RDC football field; staff flags buried clay lines

The Clark County Board of Education voted to approve construction documents for the GRC practice field and to advance the schematic design for the RDC football field renovation.

District project staff described two procurement options: release the practice-field documents for competitive bid or use a change order to add the work to an existing contractor familiar with similar field projects. Board members noted schedule advantages to continuity with contractors already on other district projects.

On the RDC schematic design, staff explained an approach that would allow a 60-yard soccer striping (instead of a smaller layout), which would permit the district to host regional events under KHSA standards; staff estimated the field-only work near $1 million and up to about $1.2 million depending on alternates, with an expanded turf area adding roughly 30% to turf costs.

Engineers also identified potential subsurface complications: two clay storm or sanitary pipes run under the proposed field at depths up to about 9 feet. Staff warned that collapsed clay lines in the future would require tearing up the turf, adding long-term maintenance risk, and said they would investigate mitigation options and present recommendations for design and cost impacts.

Board members approved moving the RCC schematic design to the next design phases (design development, then construction documents) and authorized release of practice-field documents to proceed, with no recorded opposition.
