Orono board approves bid to rebuild middle school tennis courts

Nick Tainter, the district’s director of business services, told the board that sealed bids opened Feb. 3 produced nine responses and that the low base bid was listed in the meeting materials as $798,66. He described two bid alternates: alternate one (paving between courts with asphalt instead of concrete), which staff recommended rejecting, and alternate two (removing an east walkway now to leave grass until additional courts are added), which staff recommended accepting. Tainter said the relocation improves student safety and allows the district to repurpose the current site as fields.
Board members discussed financing options presented earlier in committee, including a proposed lease levy structure to fund the project; the facilities and finance report noted an estimated impact of roughly $8 annually for a $500,000 home over a 10-year term. Tainter also told the board the project team explored site layout options and that the available space could eventually fit up to 12 courts if the district and partners chose to expand the project.
A motion was made to approve the low base bid and the recommended alternates to BCI Construction; the motion carried on a voice vote. The board did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript; the outcome was approved.
The district said the work is planned for summer 2026; staff thanked architects and engineers who supported the bid process and said additional partner discussions (including potential pickleball facilities) are ongoing.
