Superintendent outlines progress on restroom, HVAC and athletics projects and gives February finance overview

At the board meeting the superintendent introduced a facilities update by Mr. Steel, who detailed renovations across the district and logistics for upcoming athletic construction. Mr. Steel said the commons restrooms are open and "about 95" percent complete after spring break work, and the 100-hall bathrooms underwent major demo with a temporary safety corridor in place to separate construction from students.
Mr. Steel said several science rooms and classroom 525 were gutted over spring break to accelerate HVAC and finish work that had been scheduled for the summer. The auxiliary gym will receive a single, large HVAC system feeding both the auxiliary and main gym; when ceilings are removed crews will replace lighting with LED fixtures.
On Van Buren, Mr. Steel described a propane conversion and replacement of Cleaver-Brooks boilers completed before winter and said full ceiling and HVAC work is planned for summer once fabricated parts arrive to stay on schedule. The EEC renovation completed a round of permitting and inspection for new plumbing and will add bathrooms, a small health clinic and a laundry/shower area in that wing.
Mr. Steel said the athletics/turf project is still scheduled to begin April 1, with temporary fencing, signage and staffed safety corridors to allow summer football practices to continue on campus; the district will provide a temporary restroom for players. Track events and practices will be relocated to the ESC, main and auxiliary gyms and an asphalt pad for hurdles; long jump and pole-vault options are being evaluated.
The meeting also included a finance review for February. The superintendent reported overall operations were down about $15,000 compared with prior periods. Maintenance expenses increased by about $25,000 to cover boiler repairs and related service work. Technology and transportation showed month-to-month variances and the education fund was up about $24,000 year-over-year; the school resource officer fee timing (roughly $12,000 per installment, typically three times per year) was discussed as a timing matter.
The superintendent closed with announcements: the Eagle Eye magazine release, a parent-engagement survey to be sent by School Perceptions March 30–April 17, and local student recognitions (elementary schools invited to the statehouse for I-Read honors and invention convention results).
