Craig County board approves committee slate, VSBA services and routine policy updates

The Craig County School Board approved routine governance and policy items during Tuesday’s meeting, including reappointment of advisory committee members and several VSBA policy actions.
The board voted to approve the gifted and talented advisory committee for 2026–27 (motion moved by Miss Powers, seconded by Miss Whitlock). The board also approved the VSBA policy services agreement (moved by Miss Matheni) and approved the first reading of the February 2026 VSBA policy updates (moved by Mr. Grie, seconded by Miss Whitlock). The board voted to eliminate policy BDD (electronic participation) following a motion by Mr. Gilry and a second by Miss Matheni. Finally, the consent agenda was approved (motion moved by Miss Power, seconded by Mr. Gilreth).
Board members discussed efforts to broaden parent representation on the gifted and talented committee, noting challenges because many parents of gifted students are district employees; Miss Van Dyke said staff had reached out to parents and secured at least one outside respondent.
What’s next: Policy changes at first reading will return for final approval as required; staff will work to refine committee outreach and athletic policy language discussed elsewhere in the meeting.
